Lunch in West Virginia

Today I was able to get the whole family on board for a flight to West Virginia, specifically the Eastern WV Regional Airport/Shepherd Field, in Martinsburg. We got airborne at about 1345Hrs. local and flew West. The weather was overcast and cold. On the way we flew past the Laurel Racetrack (horse racing), Montgomery County Airpark, in Gaithersburg, MD, Sugarloaf Mountain, elevation 1282ft, the Potomac River, and Harper's Ferry, WV, before our landing. We taxied to the Terminal and had lunch in The Runway Cafe, located on the second floor with views of the runway. After a light lunch it was back into the air for the return trip to Tipton. Flying over the "mountains" was a new experience. Up until today much of the terrain I had flown over was flat. Except for the river valley there is a large slope, that runs North to South, that separates the area between Maryland and West Virginia. At Harper's Ferry it's about 1200ft in elevation. If you are planning on landing at Martinsburg you sort of have to go up and over the peak and then descend to your pattern altitude. It was a fun challenge. I am looking forward to flying back through the area when the weather is better.

that's a nice little trip. one other thing about martinsburg is that it's an air national guard facility. you might stumble upon (not too close hopefully) things like C-5s in the air around it. i wish i had had my camera the last time that i saw one around there.
