Variable Winds = Difficult Landings

Today was a challenge. The windsock at the airport couldn't figure out which direction it wanted to turn. Consequently, once we decided to take off from one side of the field the wind would shift either crosswind or downwind of us. We took off anyway and tried to make the best of it. Little did I know that the winds aloft were strong and steady. We tried the pattern from both sides and the plane really didn't want to come down, even with full flaps. I was forced to go around because I was too high. My instructor shot our last landing and even he admitted that it was challenging for him. That made me feel a little better about how I was flying. I have to read, read, read up on approaches, roundouts, and flares, so that I can get rid of my landing problems. It appears as if I am carrying too much landing speed which results in the balloon and the long float down the runway. Then, just when I get that under control I flare improperly and touch down hard. I'm waiting for that one good landing so that I can get over this training hump.
